First Grade Curriculum Resources
Standard of Learning
1.1 The student will identify the basic components and functions of the systems of the human body. Key concepts/skills include:
- body structures (e.g., abdomen, chest, head) and organs (e.g., heart, brain, lungs, stomach);
- the principles of correct posture;
- the interconnection of all body systems (e.g., cardiovascular, digestive, immune, muscular, nervous, skeletal, respiratory).
Understanding the Standard
The student will understand that good posture is important to your health.
Essential Knowledge and Skills
The student will:
- define posture (the way you hold your body when you sit, stand and move—allows your bones to support your body in the right way)
- describe good posture when standing. (when standing, it is important that we stand up with our shoulders back. When standing or sitting, imagine that there is a string attached to the top of your head which pulls it up)
- describe good posture when sitting. (when sitting, it is important that we have our backs straight and shoulders back. Both feet should be flat on the floor and shoulder width apart. We should sit with our bottoms at the back of the chair and our head should be up)
- identify signs of poor posture. (person slumps, upper body leans forward, etc.)
- describe problems that can arise from poor posture. (back and neck pain, poor appearance, etc.)

Have them indicate what sense enables them to know that it this food is good. Students could also draw pictures of people with good and bad posture.
- Have students practice sitting and standing with good posture.
