Standard of Learning
1.3 The student will explain the need for specific rules and practices to promote personal safety and injury-free situations. Key concepts/skills include:
- bus and automobile safety;
- pedestrian safety;
- playground safety;
- fire safety;
- home safety;
- Internet safety;
- water safety;
- bicycle, in-line skating, skateboard, scooter, and other self-propelled vehicle safety;
- the need for protective gear.
Understanding the Standard
The student will identify and describe sports protective equipment that will help protect them from injury.
Essential Knowledge and Skills
The student will:
- identify bicycle, in-line skating, and skateboard safety protective gear.
- identify other sports equipment designed to protect you from getting hurt. (football helmet, catcher’s mask, shin guards, mouth guard, life vest, etc.)
- describe why protective equipment should fit properly.

Bicycle Safety/Safety Tips
Grades: K-1
Children need to learn the importance of bicycle safety. This lesson will show them safety tips and information for safe bicycling.

Safety First
Grades K-1
It is important that children learn the importance of safety through different skills. Through this lesson, children will gain a perspective in recognizing unsafe situations and selecting the correct response or reaction. Teaching children to be aware is also teaching them to be responsible for themselves and to use their best judgments.

Lesson Ideas
- Book Mark. Give each student a plain business-size envelope. Have him/her cut off the lower corners in a rounded or scalloped fashion, making sure the straight edges of each bookmark are at least 2" long. Have students draw a protective gear (or cut pictures form magazines and paste) on each bookmark and write the correlating safety message on the back. Students can slip bookmarks over the top right- or left-hand corners of book pages.
