Understanding the Standard
The student will identify and describe the role of community health care agencies.
Essential Knowledge and Skills
The student will:
- identify health care agencies and describe what services they provide.
- ambulance services – transport people with medical needs.
- police department – help if you are lost, hurt, etc.
- fire department – put out fires or help people who are in a car accident.
- health department – provides general health care services.
- social services – provides housing, food, etc.
- mental health services – helps with emotional and other mental health needs.
- local hospitals – provide emergency and long-term care.
- emergency medical services – help if you are injured or sick.

Oral Health Education: Saving Smiles Series- “Healthy Mouth, Healthy Body”

Lesson Ideas
- Students learn about community through a (walking) tour followed by guided discussion. Students then make a cover for a book they will create about their community.
- Students learn about the police officer's role in their community by talking with an officer who visits the class or by taking a tour of a police station. Students write a sentence and draw a picture describing what they learned to place in their community books.
- Students learn about the firefighter's role in their community by talking with a firefighter who visits their class or by taking a tour of a firestation. Students write a sentence and draw a picture describing the firefighter's role in the community.
- Students discuss their experience with nurses - what they do and why. Students write a descriptive sentence and draw a picture depicting the nurses role to place in their community book.
