Standard of Learning
10.3 The student will implement personal injury prevention and self-management strategies that promote personal, family, and community health throughout life. Key concepts/skills include:
- strategies to reduce and prevent violence;
- peaceful resolution of conflicts;
- administration of emergency care;
- recognition of tendencies toward self-harm;
- recognition of life-threatening situations;
- crisis-management strategies;
- methods of avoiding gang-related activity and the use of weapons to commit violent acts of aggression;
- recognition of when to seek support for self and others.
Understanding the Standard
The student will recognize life-threatening situations, utilize crisis-management strategies, and demonstrate emergency care skills.
Essential Knowledge and Skills
The student will:
- explain crisis management. (remain calm, calm others, quick evaluation and action, etc.)
- evaluate life-threatening situations. (situations that may cause death, such as poisoning, respiratory obstruction, severe bleeding, elevated body temperature, heart attack, stroke, burns, etc.)
- demonstrate first aid treatment for someone who:
- is experiencing a respiratory or cardiac emergency;
- has an open or closed wound;
- is burned;
- is suffering from an environmental emergency;
- has an injury to bones, joints, or muscles;
- faints;
- has been bitten by an animal;
- has a head, neck, or back injury;
- is in shock;
- has symptoms of a stroke; and
- has been poisoned. (swallowed, absorbed, injected, or inhaled)

In the Mix: "Suicide Prevention"
Grade(s): 7-12
This lesson plan is designed for students in middle school and all the way up through high school. Students will use cards to sort and understand a large quantity of information regarding suicidal teens, then apply what they learn to analyses of case studies.

In the Mix: "What is Depression"
Grade(s): 9-12
In this lesson, students will examine teenage depression: what it's all about, how it feels, and ways to deal with it. This will be accomplished by small group discussions, recalling life events that trigger depressive episodes, self-reflection and topic research. Upon completion, students will have a better understanding of depression and how it relates to their own lives.

The purpose of this lesson is for students to hopefully learn about some of the ways they may be able to help someone who is feeling depressed. Teen Life Counts Suicide Prevention
Grade: 10
Students take part in a four-day "suicide prevention program" in their sophomore year. It is a very active learning experience in which every student is called upon to answer questions in class and to take part in discussions. They learn the signs and symptoms of depression as well as myths about suicide and depression.

Assessment Ideas
The student will:
- demonstrate CPR and rescue breathing.
