Understanding the Standard

The student will understand the need to respect the uniqueness and individuality of others.

Essential Knowledge and Skills

The student will:

  • define respect.
  • list examples of individual differences.
  • explain the concept of uniqueness.
  • define personal relationships.
  • define individuality.
  • describe a friendly/respectful environment:
    • people listen and are able to share ideas;
    • people are not afraid to ask for help;
    • people have self-respect and behave in responsible, caring ways;
    • people feel less stressful and more accepted;
    • people thank and compliment each other; and
    • people respect people with disabilities.
  • demonstrate ways to show respect for individual differences:
    • treat others the way you want to be treated;
    • try to understand other people’s ways of life;
    • reach out to people who are different; and
    • teach your friends to show respect to people who are different.

The student will:

  • write a story about going to a school that has a friendly/respectful environment.
  • tape record a public service announcement that addresses respecting differences.
  • role-play moving to another state or country and going to school where the culture or language is different.
  • role-play being in a situation where the student is teased and laughed at.
