6.5 The student will demonstrate injury prevention and management skills to promote personal and family health. Key concepts/skills include:

1. safety habits in vehicles and public areas;
2. first aid and safety practices;
3. strategies to prevent accidents and injuries;
4. the need for and use of protective gear;
5. awareness of behaviors that can result in violent acts.

Understanding the Standard

The student will understand the need for vehicular and public safety practices; become familiar with general first aid procedures; identify behaviors, such as the use of protective gear, that reduce the risk of accidents or injury; and recognize that certain behaviors may result in violence.

Essential Knowledge and Skills

The student will:

• identify vehicle safety precautions.
• list safety precautions to observe while at the park, playground, or on public roadways.
• explain safety precautions to take at school and in the community.
• demonstrate basic first aid treatment for injuries.
• describe the importance of first aid skills.
• list activities that require protective gear.
• provide examples of behaviors/misunderstandings that may lead to violence.

Fire Safety Skills Tag
Grades 3-5
The purpose is to have students practice their fire safety skills of stop, drop and roll, as well as moving low (crawling) through a low organized tag game.

Outdoor Survival Kit
Grades 5-7
In Hatchet , by Gary Paulsen, Brian experiences life without all the comforts of home. After the storm and the tail of the plane is visible, Brian remembers there is a survival kit on board. This activity allows the students to become aware of what they think should be in that survival kit.

Lesson Ideas

• Students plan learning centers about an assigned safety topic using props and posters. Students rotate through each center where they learn about the issue (ie. Vehicle safety, protective gear).
• Students identify emergency situations, state the appropriate response steps, and demonstrate how to perform CPR.
• Students work in groups to develop fact sheets about their assigned safety issue. Then they create role-plays to illustrate how to use the safety facts and the decision-making steps to make safe decisions about ways to avoid accidents, preventive measures and what to do in an emergency.

Assessment Ideas

The student will:

• interview five adults regarding seatbelt usage and record their reasons for using or not using a safety belt.
• interview 10 peers regarding seatbelt usage and and record their reasons for using or not using a safety belt.
• practice and demonstrate first aid skills.
• research the leading causes of unintentional injury deaths for individuals less than 24 years old.
