Understanding the Standard

The student will identify people who help to provide health and safety information.

Essential Knowledge and Skills

The student will:

  • identify or describe members of their community who provide health and safety services:
    • school - teacher, school resource officer, nurse, etc.;
    • public safety - fire fighter, police officer, etc.;
    • family - parent, grandparent, etc.; and
    • medical - dentist, doctor, nurse, etc.

Lesson Ideas

  • Students learn about community through a (walking) tour followed by guided discussion. Students then make a cover for a book they will create about their community.
  • Students learn about the police officer's role in their community by talking with an officer who visits the class or by taking a tour of a police station. Students write a sentence and draw a picture describing what they learned to place in their community books.
  • Students learn about the firefighter's role in their community by talking with a firefighter who visits their class or by taking a tour of a firestation. Students write a sentence and draw a picture describing the firefighter's role in the community.
  • Students discuss their experience with nurses - what they do and why. Students write a descriptive sentence and draw a picture depicting the nurses role to place in their community book.

You Can't Judge A Book By It's Cover
The objective of this activity is to have students learn that how something is packaged is not necessarily the way it really is. It is very important for children of this age to know whom to trust and how to receive the real, accurate message regarding something they are going to do, buy, or support. Learning to question the truth of messages sent to children this age can often be a first step to understanding that questioning first is better than wishing you had questioned after action was taken.
