Social-Emotional Learning: What is SEL and Why it Matters
According to the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), social-emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. CASEL endorses the five core competencies of self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision making, social awareness, and relationship skills as contributors to both academic and social success. For additional information, visit the CASEL website. Additionally, CASEL has outlined Teaching Activities to Support Core SEL Competencies.
